Assessment and Therapy for Auditory Processing Disorder (APD),

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) for Tinnitus, Hyperacusis and Misophonia

Kingston, Tasmania

or via Telehealth

People with auditory processing difficulties can have normal hearing, but still struggle to:

  • follow instructions

  • understand spoken information

  • remember spoken information

  • learn new things

  • follow conversations

  • learn to read and have trouble reading with fluency

  • comprehend what they have read and heard

  • cope with loud sounds

  • separate speech from background noise e.g. listening difficulties in the classroom or open plan office.

Did you know your brain helps you to hear?

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) disrupts the brain’s ability to process and understand auditory information, even in people with normal hearing. It is a breakdown in receiving, remembering, understanding and using auditory/spoken information.

Similar to individuals with hearing loss, both children and adults with APD have difficulty understanding speech, especially in noisy environments.

At Auditory Processing Services, we have normative data to diagnose children from 3.5 years, up to elderly adults. Treatment in the form of auditory training can be extremely beneficial to both adults and children.

It is not a hearing problem although many people initially think it is hearing loss. It is not ADHD, Dyslexia or ASD although many children with these difficulties also struggle with auditory issues.

It is not diagnosed by schools or educators, although many schools recognise this issue in students.

    Children

We see children from 3.5 years old. With early diagnosis and intervention, we can help your child improve their auditory processing skills and get them to where they need to be. This can help in many areas including social, emotional and academic.

    Referrals

Clients can be referred by teachers, GPs, paediatricians, and allied health including speech therapists, OT’s, osteopaths and psychologists. Many people recognise APD red flags in themselves or their child and self-refer. You don’t need a referral to book an appointment with Auditory Processing Services.

    NDIS, DVA and Medicare

You may be able to access Medicare rebates with a referral, or if you or your child has a Team Care Arrangement in place. If you have access to funding through the NDIS, we can provide services to self-managed, plan-managed and NDIS managed clients.
