About our Hobart clinic: Auditory Processing Services

What we do

Despite having ‘normal’ hearing, there are many people who present at our clinic as if they have hearing loss. The most common cause is Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), also known as Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD), which requires comprehensive testing to assess auditory processing skills. Auditory Processing Disorder can be successfully treated.

At Auditory Processing Services, Amber Richards, a Clinical Audiologist who specialises in auditory processing disorders, offers testing and therapies to children and adults in the Hobart region.

Following assessment, a tailored therapy program is developed to address the underlying difficulties and strengthen auditory processing skills.

  • We test young children from 3.5 years old and adults including elderly adults.

  • We can work with clients who have hearing aids, a Cochlear Implant, or a Brainstem Implant fitted.

  • We have great success working with clients with acquired brain injury (ABI) and many of our clients are neurodiverse.

Who should seek APD assessment?

If you say “YES” to any of these questions you should consider booking an appointment:

  1. Do you suspect that you, your child or someone you care for has APD?

  2. Have you, your child or someone you care for previously been diagnosed with APD?

  3. Have you, your child or someone you care for been diagnosed with APD and been given limited remediation options?

  4. Is your child having difficulties in the classroom?

  5. Are you, your child or someone you care for having difficulty listening?

  6. Are you, your child or someone you care for having difficulties following and remembering instructions?

  7. Are you, your child or someone you care for having difficulties in noisy situations?

  8. Do you know someone who has been fitted with hearing aids and still having problems hearing, especially in noisy environments?

Teachers are often advised that a child in their class has APD but are unsure what to do about it.  There are many ways a child with APD can be helped in the classroom.  We can offer support for teachers, along with therapy programs to assist children in the short and long term.

Outcomes

No matter what age a person is, a diagnosis can be validating and therapy can be life changing to a person affected by APD.

Early diagnosis and intervention can have huge impacts on an individual's progress and behaviour at home, school, work and with peer groups. Giving a person the best opportunity to succeed is why we specialise in therapy and long-term solutions.
